VARU by Atmosphere

Atmosphere Core Group's VARU brand: a premium all-inclusive on Madivaru island, North Malé Atoll. 108 villas for families and couples, a 2021 build, the third Atmosphere resort in North Malé (alongside OBLU SELECT Lobigili and OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi), a premium all-inclusive plan that includes two dives a day, and a 40-minute speedboat at the mid-range routing.

VARU by Atmosphere sits on Madivaru island in the western reaches of North Malé Atoll, opened in 2021 under the Atmosphere Core Group's VARU brand. It is the group's third North Malé resort, completing a set of three across its brands: OBLU SELECT Lobigili (adults-only, 68 all-over-water villas), OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi (value all-inclusive, 290 villas, family-and-couples), and VARU here (premium all-inclusive, 108 villas, family-and-couples). VARU sits between the adults-only SELECT and the value-family XPERIENCE. Its real distinction is the Premium All-Inclusive plan: it covers diving and most water sports rather than charging them as extras, which is unusual at this price level.

Setting

Madivaru is a natural island in the western reaches of North Malé Atoll, with the 108 villas across the beach and the lagoon-side over-water jetty. The house reef along the shore carries the daily snorkelling.

The western position puts North Malé's best-known dive sites within boat range; the 40-minute speedboat sits at the mid-range routing.

Critique: at 108 villas with a family-and-couples crowd, the resort reads busy at peak season; for a quiet, low-density stay within the Atmosphere group, there isn't one (the three resorts all run at family scale or all over water).

Who it's for

  • Families and couples who want a premium all-inclusive in a recent build without an adults-only rule. VARU sits at the family-and-couples point between Atmosphere's adults-only SELECT and its value-family XPERIENCE; the 2021 opening keeps it feeling current.
  • Travellers who want included diving on a premium all-inclusive. The plan covers two dives a day plus most water sports, where most premium all-inclusives nearby treat diving as a paid extra.
  • Atmosphere Core Group regulars who want the third North Malé resort. The set of VARU, OBLU SELECT Lobigili, and OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi makes a cross-brand stay easy within one trip.
  • Travellers who want the western-atoll position for diving and water days. Madivaru sits within boat range of North Malé's best-known dive sites, and the included-diving plan suits a dive-led week.

Who it isn't for

  • Couples who want a firmly adults-only resort. VARU is family-and-couples; for an 18+ rule within the Atmosphere group, OBLU SELECT Lobigili is the answer.
  • Travellers who want the area's ultra-luxury anchors. VARU is a premium all-inclusive, below the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands, Gili Lankanfushi, and One&Only Reethi Rah level.
  • Travellers who want the quickest arrival. At 40 minutes VARU is at the mid-range routing; for the quickest, Kurumba at 10 minutes.
  • Surf travellers. VARU isn't on the surf-break reef passes; for surf adjacency, Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi or Cinnamon Dhonveli.

Food & drink

Four venues anchor the VARU Premium All-Inclusive plan. The main all-day pavilion runs a rotating buffet plus à-la-carte across breakfast to dinner, with separate Maldivian, Asian, Mediterranean, and international sections; the over-water specialty venue does dinner-only seafood and international; the beach-side grill handles the barbecue lunch and dinner; and the pool bar runs all-day lunch and sundowners. The plan covers the main pavilion plus rotating à-la-carte upgrades.

The wine and cocktails run at the Atmosphere premium all-inclusive level; the plan's real signature is how much it includes, covering diving and most water sports beyond the usual premium all-inclusive.

Honest read on the food: four venues is solid for 108 villas, and the per-venue cooking is at the Atmosphere premium standard. For more breadth, Kurumba at eight venues; for something genuinely different, OBLU SELECT Lobigili runs JUST VEG, a vegetarian-only restaurant that is rare in the country.

Diving and the house reef

The on-property dive operation is VARU's real strength. The Premium All-Inclusive plan includes two dives a day, with the wider North Malé channel sites (HP Reef, Manta Point at Lankan Reef during the southwest-monsoon manta aggregation, Banana Reef, Maagiri Caves) within boat range. Included diving is rare at the premium all-inclusive level, and it is what the property is built around within the wider Atmosphere group.

Certification courses run from Open Water through Divemaster; the plan covers two-tank boat dives as standard, with technical and specialty courses as paid extras.

Honest caveat: for a specialist dive operation, Bandos has the Orchid PADI 5-star and a hyperbaric chamber; VARU's strength is the included-diving plan rather than dive-specialist depth or a recompression chamber on site.

Spa and wellness

The Elena Spa runs at the Atmosphere premium level, with massages, facials, body scrubs, and South Asian wellness treatments.

At 108 villas with a family-and-couples crowd, spa appointments are moderately available; book treatments when you confirm.

Honest caveat: if wellness is the whole point of the trip, the area's dedicated wellness islands are well ahead.

Activities and the on-island programme

Watersports cover the Premium All-Inclusive range: stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, guided snorkel trips, and the included two-dive-a-day programme. The plan's signature is how much it includes beyond the usual premium all-inclusive.

Being family-and-couples, it runs a structured kids' programme, and the Atmosphere group's resorts (VARU, OBLU SELECT Lobigili, and OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi in North Malé, plus Atmosphere Kanifushi in Lhaviyani and Furaveri in Raa) make a wider split-stay easy to arrange.

Smaller offerings: a dolphin-watching cruise, a sunset cruise, a private-sandbank trip, and a Malé excursion.

Getting there

The standard route from Velana International is about a 40-minute speedboat straight to the Madivaru jetty.

The speedboat runs on a wide daily schedule, with late-night runs by prior arrangement. At 40 minutes it sits at the mid-range routing (alongside Coco Bodu Hithi), and like all speedboat islands it absorbs the late-flight European arrival that the seaplane islands can't.

Visa: most nationalities receive a 30-day free visa on arrival. The Tourism GST adds 17 percent to the total bill.

Best time to visit

North Malé's seasons follow the standard Maldivian pattern. December through April is the dry season, with the European peak.

May through November carries the southwest monsoon; the Manta Point run during the southwest monsoon is the seasonal highlight, and it pairs well with the included-diving plan.

Contrarian's pick: late September into October for the manta aggregation at shoulder-season value, with the diving already in the plan.

Sustainability, the numbers

The Atmosphere Core Group sustainability programme covers the basics: energy efficiency, waste segregation, and marine stewardship around the island.

With diving at the centre of the resort, the dive school works the house reef daily and runs the daily reef monitoring.

What is absent: a published, independently audited annual impact report of the kind Soneva produces.

Verdict

For families and couples who want a premium all-inclusive in a recent build without an adults-only rule, travellers who want included diving on a premium all-inclusive, Atmosphere Core Group regulars after the third North Malé resort, and travellers who want the western-atoll position for diving and water days, VARU by Atmosphere is the right answer at North Malé's Atmosphere premium all-inclusive end. The 108 villas across Beach, Beach Pool, Sunrise Beach, Sunset Pool Beach, Water, Sunrise Water, and Family Beach types, the four-venue Premium All-Inclusive plan, the included two-dives-a-day diving, and the 40-minute speedboat from Velana are the headline features. The premium all-inclusive polish sitting below the area's ultra-luxury anchors, the 108-villa scale rather than a low-density layout, the 40-minute crossing rather than the quickest arrival, and a working rather than audited approach to sustainability are the honest trade-offs.

Frequently asked

What does the Premium All-Inclusive plan actually include at VARU?
The plan covers the main pavilion buffet across all meals, rotating à-la-carte upgrades at the over-water specialty venue, the standard wine and cocktails, and, unusually, two dives a day plus most water sports (stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, guided snorkel trips, sailing). The included diving is the real distinction: most premium all-inclusives nearby charge diving as an extra, while VARU builds two dives a day into the plan. For divers, that makes the total cost of the trip noticeably lower than the standard premium all-inclusives nearby.
How does VARU fit within the Atmosphere Core Group's three North Malé resorts?
The Atmosphere Core Group runs three resorts in North Malé, each pitched differently. OBLU SELECT Lobigili is the adults-only one (premium all-inclusive, 68 all-over-water villas, 18+ only, the JUST VEG vegetarian restaurant, a 30-minute speedboat). OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi is the value one (value all-inclusive, 290 villas, family-and-couples, a 15-minute speedboat). VARU is the premium family-and-couples one with included diving (108 villas, a 40-minute speedboat). The three make an easy cross-brand stay within a single trip.
