Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi
Sri Lankan-operator (Aitken Spence Adaaran) mid-range all-inclusive on Hudhuranfushi island, North Malé Atoll. 215 villas at the value end, with the Lohi's left-hand reef break peeling off the eastern point, Aitken Spence running it since 2005, and a 35-minute speedboat that gets you there faster than most of the area's seaplane islands.
Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi sits on Hudhuranfushi island on the western edge of North Malé Atoll, opened in 1976 and run by Sri Lanka's Aitken Spence under its Adaaran brand since 2005. It is the area's mid-range all-inclusive option rather than one of its ultra-luxury anchors, and three things define it. Lohi's, one of the country's three or four best-known surf waves, breaks off the eastern point, making this the marquee surf base for the November-to-April southern-hemisphere swell. Aitken Spence brings decades of Sri Lankan hospitality to the mid-range Maldivian tier. And the 35-minute speedboat from Velana, with no seaplane needed, gets you to the island faster than most, which matters for European travellers landing after 16:00 when the seaplanes have stopped flying.
Setting
Hudhuranfushi is a natural island on the western edge of North Malé Atoll, about 1.2 kilometres long. The 215 villas run around the shoreline and the western over-water jetty.
Its North Malé position is one of the quickest to reach: Velana is 35 minutes by speedboat, with the marquee surf and dive sites within boat range.
Critique: being an older, naturally developed island, the layout is denser than the newer chain-luxury resorts; for a low-density, secluded feel, look elsewhere in the area.
Who it's for
- Surf travellers who want Lohi's, the left-hand reef break off the eastern point. The November-to-April swell pairs with a proper surf-house setup: board storage, dawn dispatch, and surf guides.
- Travellers who value a speedboat over the seaplane curfew. A 35-minute boat from Velana runs on a wider daily schedule and absorbs the late-flight arrival risk that the seaplane-only islands can't.
- Mid-range families and couples who want Aitken Spence's Sri Lankan warmth without the chain-luxury bill. The Select all-inclusive plan covers the basics well at the value end.
- Repeat travellers who want a short North Malé stay without losing days to transfers. A five- or six-night trip works here because neither end is eaten by travel.
Who it isn't for
- Travellers who want the area's ultra-luxury anchors. Adaaran Select is mid-range all-inclusive, not the Banyan Tree / Four Seasons / Gili Lankanfushi / Huvafen Fushi / One&Only / Patina level.
- Honeymooners who want a strictly adults-only feel. The Select brand takes families and couples alike.
- Divers who want a specialist dive operation. The on-island dive school is solid but mid-range; for more dive depth in North Malé, Bandos (with its own hyperbaric chamber) or the Banana Reef operators are better.
- Travellers who want an LVMH-Maison or Marriott Bonvoy chain-luxury programme.
The villas
The 215 villas split across Garden Villa, Beach Villa, Sunset Beach Villa, Ocean Villa (over-water), and Sunset Ocean Villa types along the Hudhuranfushi shoreline and the western over-water jetty. Sizes vary by category; confirm at booking.
| Villa | Size | Sleeps | Pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Villa | 60 m² | 2 | No |
| Beach Villa | 80 m² | 2 | No |
| Sunset Beach Villa | 95 m² | 3 | No |
| Ocean Villa | 85 m² | 2 | No |
| Sunset Ocean Villa | 105 m² | 2 | No |
Food & drink
Four venues cover the Select all-inclusive plan. The main all-day pavilion runs a rotating buffet with separate Asian, Sri Lankan, Mediterranean, and Maldivian sections; the over-water à-la-carte venue does dinner only; the beach-side grill handles lunch and sundowners; and the surf-deck bar runs from dawn to sunset for the surf crowd. The current plan is a 24-hour dine-around Premium All Inclusive (confirmed on the Booking and Agoda listings): the speciality venues are included rather than charged as upgrades, and round-the-clock service suits the early-and-late surf rhythm.
The Sri Lankan kitchen is the real distinction at the buffet: the curries run deeper than the pan-Asian rotations the chain-luxury islands tend to serve. The bar is value-tier but included.
Honest read on the food: four venues is broad for the mid-range tier, though the polish sits below the premium islands. The strength is the warmth of the Sri Lankan kitchen and how much the Select plan reliably includes.
Diving and the house reef
Hudhuranfushi's North Malé position puts it within boat range of the area's marquee dive sites (HP Reef, Manta Point, Banana Reef, Lankan Manta Point). The on-island dive school runs the standard PADI programme, with certification courses available.
Surf is the bigger water story. Lohi's, the left-hander off the eastern point, runs November through April on the southern-hemisphere swell; board hire and surf guides are on-site. The wider North Malé surf cluster (Lohi's, Sultans, Honkys, Jailbreaks, and Pasta Point at Cinnamon Dhonveli) is reachable by boat.
Honest caveat: for a more specialist dive operation, Bandos nearby or, further afield, Six Senses Laamu for its Yin Yang manta-cleaning routing.
Spa and wellness
The on-island spa runs at a mid-range level.
The menu covers the usual massages, facials, and body scrubs, plus Ayurvedic-influenced treatments in keeping with the Sri Lankan operator.
Honest caveat: if wellness is the whole point of the trip, the dedicated wellness islands are well ahead.
Activities and the on-island programme
Watersports are covered by the Select plan: stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, guided snorkel trips, and an introductory dive. The surf-house programme (Lohi's dawn dispatch, surf guides, board hire) is what sets it apart.
A Sri Lankan cultural night reflects the Aitken Spence operator on the activity calendar.
Smaller offerings: a dolphin-watching cruise, sunset cruises in the dry season, and a Malé city excursion (a 30-minute speedboat hop the seaplane-only islands can't easily match).
Getting there
The standard route from Velana International is a 35-minute speedboat straight to the Hudhuranfushi jetty.
The speedboat runs on a wide daily schedule, with late-night runs by prior arrangement. That is the real advantage over seaplane-only islands for anyone landing after 16:00: no forced airport-hotel overnight.
Visa: most nationalities receive a 30-day free visa on arrival. The Tourism GST adds 17 percent to the total bill.
Best time to visit
North Malé's seasons follow the standard Maldivian pattern. December through April is the dry season, with the European Christmas, New Year, and Easter peak. For surfers, it is also the peak swell season at Lohi's.
May through November carries the southwest monsoon, with more frequent showers. The August Italian and German school holidays bring a second spike.
Contrarian's pick: late January into early February for the best surf and weather together; late September into early October for value without the worst of the monsoon.
Sustainability, the numbers
Aitken Spence's corporate sustainability programme covers the basics: energy efficiency, waste segregation, and marine stewardship around the island.
Sitting beside a surf break gives the resort a stake in protecting the reef, and the dive school monitors the house reef daily.
What is absent: a published, independently audited annual impact report of the kind Soneva produces.
For surf travellers who want Lohi's off the eastern point, travellers who value a speedboat over the seaplane curfew, mid-range families and couples after Aitken Spence's Sri Lankan warmth, and short-stay travellers who want one of North Malé's quickest arrivals, Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi is the right answer at the area's mid-range tier. The 215 villas across Garden Villa, Beach Villa, Sunset Beach Villa, Ocean Villa, and Sunset Ocean Villa types, the four restaurants anchored by the Sri Lankan kitchen, the surf-house programme at Lohi's, and the 35-minute speedboat from Velana are the headline features. The mid-range polish sitting below the area's ultra-luxury anchors, the family-and-couples scale rather than a quiet adults-only one, the older, denser island layout, and a working rather than audited approach to sustainability are the honest trade-offs.

Frequently asked
- What is the surf situation at Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi?
- Lohi's, a left-hand reef break, runs directly off the eastern point. November to April, on the southern-hemisphere swell, is peak; the resort runs a surf-house programme (board hire, surf guides, dawn departures). The wider North Malé cluster (Sultans, Honkys, Jailbreaks, and Pasta Point at Cinnamon Dhonveli) is reachable by boat. For the country's most accessible reef break at a mid-range price, Hudhuranfushi is the answer.
- How does Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi compare to North Malé's ultra-luxury properties?
- Very different price levels. Adaaran Select runs 215 villas at the mid-range Sri Lankan-operator tier, with the surf adjacency and the 35-minute speedboat; North Malé's ultra-luxury anchors (Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, Four Seasons Kuda Huraa, Gili Lankanfushi, Huvafen Fushi, One&Only Reethi Rah, and Patina Maldives) run at premium-to-top-tier with chain-luxury or boutique-luxury polish. For surf at a mid-range price, Hudhuranfushi; for the polish, those six.
