Nova Maldives

Nova Maldives sits on Vakarufalhi island in central Alif Dhaal (South Ari) Atoll, a small natural island that opened as a resort in 1992. Pulse Hotels & Resorts (the Maldivian operator led by Sanjay Maniku and Mohamed Khaleel, founded in 2015 as a subsidiary of Deep Blue Private Ltd, a Maldivian investment company focused on tourism) took over the property and relaunched it under the Nova Maldives brand in 2021 after an expansive refurbishment. Three things define a stay here. The five restaurants run the dining surface across the all-day multi-cuisine Soul Kitchen, the over-water Japanese Mizu, the dinner-only grill Flames, the Italian-international WINK, and the SOLIS international buffet. The location, on a small island in central South Ari, places the year-round whale-shark corridor along the atoll's southern reef edge within day-trip range, with the on-island PADI centre running the routing alongside the wider South Ari channel sites (peak August through November). And the all-inclusive plan covers main meals plus unlimited selected wines, cocktails, spirits and beers, with snorkel equipment and non-motorised watersports thrown in; Booking's couples rating has settled at 9.7 out of 10 since the rebrand.

Setting

Vakarufalhi is a small naturally-vegetated island in central Alif Dhaal (South Ari) Atoll, walking end to end in about ten minutes, with the perimeter beach and the over-water row reaching off the lagoon-side jetty. Native palm canopy and the deliberately undeveloped beach-back vegetation preserve the small-island feel.

The South Ari position places Nova on the year-round whale-shark corridor along the atoll's southern reef edge and within tender range of the wider South Ari channel dive sites; the seaplane is about 25 minutes from Velana.

Critique: the small-island scale at the 5-star upper-mid level reads as deliberately intimate rather than as a wide-spacing photographic island; for that geometry, larger-footprint islands at the same atoll are the alternative.

• Travellers wanting boutique-luxury polish at the small-island top. For that polish at the same atoll, V Villas Maldives at Mirihi sits clearly higher with its MGallery Collection and Studio Gronda quiet-luxury identity.
• Travellers wanting a structured kids' programme and a marquee family inventory. Nova welcomes all ages but the small-island layout and the adults-leaning operational tone (Booking 9.7 couples rating) means the kids' side runs as a supporting layer; for larger family-resort scale at the same atoll, the bigger central-atoll alternatives sit ahead.
• Dive-as-identity travellers wanting a dedicated dive base with on-island decompression facilities. Nova's dive operation is well-resourced but not the dive-specialist anchor; for that, Bandos up at North Malé runs the on-island decompression infrastructure.

The villas

Soul Kitchen is the all-day multi-cuisine pavilion at breakfast, lunch and dinner across American, Cantonese, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and local cooking, the main social anchor. Flames is the grill-and-BBQ room at dinner. Mizu is the over-water Japanese restaurant covering sushi and Asian grill at dinner. WINK is the Italian-international room across breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktail hour. And SOLIS is the international buffet pavilion.

The all-inclusive plan covers main meals at the included rotation plus unlimited selected wines, cocktails, mocktails, spirits, beers, juices and soft drinks across the bars and restaurants. Snorkel equipment rental, kayaks and paddleboards are included; motorised watersports run on top of the plan. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinner supplements for adults are folded into the booking price on those dates.

Honest read on the food: five venues is a broad spread for a small island, and the per-venue specialty depth at Mizu (Japanese over-water) and Flames (grill) is the genuine change from the pre-rebrand offer. For destination-restaurant marquee or single-chef cooking, the country's headline food islands sit elsewhere; here the cluster breadth at the all-inclusive level is the strength.

Diving and the house reef

The Vakarufalhi house reef along the western lagoon edge has decades of guest reporting behind it and supports the daily-from-the-beach snorkel rhythm. The South Ari corridor sits within tender range from the on-island PADI school, and the year-round whale-shark routing along the atoll's southern reef edge is the structural marine programme.

Courses run from Open Water through Divemaster, with the wider South Ari cluster covering Kuda Rah Thila, Maamigili Beyru, Maaya Thila pinnacle dives, and the whale-shark corridor sites. The small-group dive-boat scale matches the small-island layout.

Honest caveat: for a same-atoll chain-luxury alternative with a larger dive operation plus the marquee Ithaa undersea dining, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is the comparison; Nova's strength is the boutique scale plus the all-inclusive economics rather than dive-specialist depth.

Spa and wellness

The on-island spa runs the treatment-room cluster, the steam-and-sauna circuit and the yoga layer; the small-island scale keeps treatment slots sensible at peak season.

Treatment menu covers massage, facial, body-and-scrub plus broader Asian wellness modalities (Thai, Balinese, Ayurvedic-influenced); the all-inclusive plan typically does not cover spa treatments outside specific booking-window inclusions.

Honest caveat: for wellness-immersion as the trip's centre, the country's dedicated wellness islands sit a clear tier above. Here the spa is a supporting layer alongside the dining and watersports surface.

Activities and the on-island programme

The South Ari whale-shark corridor day-trip is the headline marine product, run from the on-island PADI school throughout the year with the peak window roughly August through November in this part of the corridor.

Watersports cover the included non-motorised range (stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, guided snorkel trips on the house reef and the wider South Ari cluster, plus the introductory dive programme). Motorised water sports run as upgrades on top of the all-inclusive plan.

Smaller offerings: a cultural-excursion programme to nearby inhabited islands, a cooking-class programme, the wedding-and-celebration coordination at the boutique-island scale, sunset and dolphin cruises in the dry window, and private-sandbank dispatches with a chef.

Getting there

The standard transfer from Velana International is a roughly 25-minute shared seaplane direct to the Vakarufalhi lagoon platform. At the time of writing, Booking shows the shared seaplane at about US$475 per adult one-way, with a temporary US$40 per person fuel surcharge currently applied; private seaplane charter is available at about US$5,500 each way.

Seaplanes only fly in daylight, with international arrivals at Velana required before about 15:00 for same-day connection; late arrivals overnight near Velana and fly to Vakarufalhi the next morning. Villa International Airport at Maamigili sits about 13 kilometres away and provides a domestic-flight alternative if needed.

Visa: most nationalities receive a 30-day free visa on arrival. The Maldives tourism GST is 17 percent on the total stay, and a US$12 per child per night green tax applies (the adult green tax is already in the Booking adult price).

Best time to visit

South Ari follows the standard central-atoll pattern with the year-round whale-shark window adding the distinctive marine signal. December through April is the dry stretch with the cleanest lagoon clarity and the European peak booking pressure.

May through November carries the southwest monsoon with materially lower rates; the whale-shark encounter pattern continues through the wet shoulder, with the August-to-November window as the corridor peak in this part of the atoll.

Contrarian's pick: late October to early November after the wet-season winds settle and before the December peak rate adjustment, with the whale-shark routing still active.

Sustainability, the numbers

Nova runs the standard Maldivian-operator sustainability measures under Pulse Hotels & Resorts: filtered still water bottled on the island, reduced single-use plastic across food and beverage, on-island solar contribution to the back-of-house power-mix, and reef monitoring through the dive operation.

Marine programming runs through the on-island dive school and the South Ari whale-shark corridor monitoring that several peer South Ari properties contribute to.

What's missing: a property-specific, independently audited annual impact report of the Soneva kind, and no carbon levy on the bill (the Maldivian government green tax applies separately).
