Capella Maldives
Capella Hotel Group's first Maldivian property, opening 2027 at the Fari Islands cluster: 57 villas and mansions by Kengo Kuma (architecture) and André Fu (interior), with the group's signature Auriga Spa and a per-villa Capella Personal Assistant programme. Pre-opening; this page records the operator-published details, not lived experience.
Capella Maldives is the announced fourth Capella Hotel Group property in Asia-Pacific and the group's first Maldivian opening. The Fari Islands cluster, at the northern edge of North Malé Atoll, groups four islands under one master plan: a Marriott Ritz-Carlton flag at Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands (opened 2021, 100-villa ring-shaped circular island), Patina Maldives (opened 2021, Capella Hotel Group's existing design-led Maldivian property), and Fari Campus (the cluster's shared dining and marina district). Capella's island sits adjacent to Patina in the same lagoon, sharing the cluster's marina and campus while carrying the group's service-led, residential style, distinct from Patina's design-led sister positioning. Three things define the property. The architecture and interior come from the Kengo Kuma and André Fu collaboration, the same Japanese architect and Hong Kong interior designer pairing the group brought to Capella Bangkok and Capella Sydney, with Kuma's signature overhanging slatted timber roofs adapted to the tropical Maldivian beach. The dining centres on Keveli, the resort's signature oceanfront destination, which the operator describes as four immersive dining concepts within four distinctly designed spaces, an arrangement the group has not run at any other Capella property. And the wellness programme runs the group's signature Auriga Spa brand, the same wellness identity as at Capella Singapore and Capella Bangkok, with six treatment rooms including a flotation tank and a VIP suite with hydrotherapy tub and infrared sauna. Honest disclosure: the property is announced for a 2027 opening at the time of this writing (as of 2026-05-28) and is not yet operating. Imagery on this page is sourced from the Fari Islands cluster official press materials; every claim below traces to operator publications, not on-property observation. We will rebuild the page against on-property reporting once the resort opens.
Who it's for
- Capella Hotel Group loyalty travellers wanting to add the Maldives to the portfolio. The 10-property global group (Singapore, Bangkok, Sydney, Hanoi, Shanghai, Florence, Ubud, plus the Maldivian opening) sits at the Singapore-based ultra-luxury level; for the group's first Maldivian flagship at the Fari Islands cluster, Capella Maldives is the answer.
- Travellers drawn to the Kengo Kuma and André Fu design pairing at the Fari Islands cluster. The architecture and interior collaboration here runs differently from the cluster's Marriott Ritz-Carlton flag (Kerry Hill's 2021 ring-shaped circular island) and the design-led Patina sister property (Studio MK27's 2021 contemporary style).
- Auriga Spa loyalty travellers wanting the country's only Capella-flagged wellness programme. The Auriga Spa runs across the wider Capella global portfolio (Singapore Sentosa, Bangkok Chao Phraya, Sydney, and the Maldivian Fari Islands entry); for cross-portfolio Auriga-flag wellness in the Maldives, Capella Maldives is the only answer.
- Travellers wanting the cluster's service-led, residential-style stay with a per-villa Capella Personal Assistant programme. The published positioning leans service-led-residential rather than kids-club-led family-resort, with the Capella Personal Assistant programme assigning a single host per villa across the stay.
Who it isn't for
- Travellers planning a 2026 booking. The property is pre-opening; the 2027 announced opening pushes a 2026 booking into the cluster's already-operating partners Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands and Patina Maldives instead.
- Travellers wanting a seaplane transfer. Fari Islands is speedboat-only from Velana International (approximately 45 minutes); for seaplane resorts, look to the outer atolls.
- Travellers wanting a family-resort positioning with a kids' club at the centre. The published Capella Maldives positioning leans service-led-residential rather than kids-club-led; for the cluster's family-leaning alternative, see Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands.
- Travellers wanting verified on-property service evidence. This page records announced positioning, not lived experience; for properties elsewhere with multi-year service track records at the ultra-luxury level, Cheval Blanc Randheli at Noonu (LVMH Maison, opened 2013) and One&Only Reethi Rah at North Malé (Kerzner, opened 2005) are the comparators.
The villas
The 57 villas and mansions are split between beach and over-water layouts on the Capella island, every category carrying a private infinity pool. Sub-category square-metre figures vary by published press materials; confirm at booking once the operator reservation system opens.
| Villa | Size | Sleeps | Pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach Pool Villa (1-bedroom) | 220 m² | 2 | Yes |
| Overwater Pool Villa (1-bedroom) | 220 m² | 2 | Yes |
| Beach Pool Residence (2-bedroom) | 340 m² | 4 | Yes |
| Capella Mansion (3-bedroom signature) | 720 m² | 6 | Yes |
Food & drink
Dining centres on Keveli, published as the resort's signature oceanfront destination running four immersive dining concepts in four distinctly designed spaces. The four-concepts-in-one-venue idea is unusual at the cluster (the Ritz-Carlton flag at the same cluster runs six discrete venues, including the over-water Iwau Japanese; the design-led Patina runs seven discrete venues, including the dedicated Italian Veli and the Asian Brasa).
Beyond Keveli, the operator publishes additional all-day and casual dining venues. The Fari Campus, the shared cluster district at the marina, carries cross-property food and beverage that Capella guests can access alongside Ritz-Carlton and Patina guests, including the cluster's marina-side casual venues.
Editorial caveat: the food programme has not been observed by guests at the time of writing. The four-concept Keveli idea is operator-announced; the practical dining experience (kitchen quality, sommelier programme, breakfast rhythm) will be reported once the resort opens in 2027.
Diving and the house reef
The Fari Islands cluster sits at the northern edge of North Malé Atoll, with house-reef access on the lagoon side of each cluster island. The published Capella positioning emphasises wellness over dive programming; for cluster dive-focused travellers, the operator publishes a shared cluster dive operation routing through the marina.
North Malé Atoll's dive geography includes the Banana Reef cluster, Manta Point at HP Reef, and the channel sites along the eastern atoll edge. The cluster's central-atoll position means dive-day routing is shorter than from the outer atolls, although the depth-range variety is narrower.
Editorial caveat: the dive operation has not been observed at the time of writing. Operator-published positioning is competent rather than specialist; for a serious specialist dive programme, Six Senses Laamu in Laamu is the alternative, with its house reef and channel sites and its marine-biology research team.
Spa and wellness
The wellness programme runs the group's signature Auriga Spa brand, the cross-portfolio Capella wellness identity. The Maldivian Auriga includes six treatment rooms, a flotation tank, and a VIP spa suite with hydrotherapy tub and an adjacent infrared sauna relaxation area.
The Auriga programme is calibrated to the lunar cycle at Singapore and Bangkok, with treatment menus that shift across the month; whether the Maldivian version carries the same lunar-calibration framework is still operator-confirmation pending.
Getting there
Transfer is by branded speedboat from Velana International, roughly 45 minutes across the central atolls. The Fari Islands cluster operates a shared marina that serves all cluster properties (Capella, Patina, Ritz-Carlton, Fari Campus) on a single shuttle schedule.
A 45-minute speedboat is the cluster's standard transfer, materially faster than the seaplane to the outer atolls. The speedboat runs on a wider schedule than the daylight-only seaplane and absorbs late-arrival international flights without requiring an overnight near Velana.
Visa: most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. Passport must be valid six months past entry. Departure tax is included in the airline ticket since 2016.

Frequently asked
- When does Capella Maldives open?
- The announced opening is 2027 at the time of this writing (as of 2026-05-28). The Fari Islands cluster master plan published the Capella opening across earlier 2023 and 2025 windows; the 2027 figure is the most recent operator-published date. We track the date against the Fari Islands developer site and Capella Hotel Group corporate communications and refresh this page when the operator publishes a more specific opening month.
- How does Capella Maldives relate to Patina Maldives at the same cluster?
- Both properties operate under the Capella Hotel Group, the Singapore-based ultra-luxury operator founded in 2002 by Horst Schulze (previously the president of Ritz-Carlton). Patina Maldives is the group's design-led sister brand, opened 2021 and currently operating at the Fari Islands cluster. Capella Maldives is the group's service-led flagship brand, scheduled to open 2027 at the same cluster. The two sister brands sit at distinct positions within the same group: Patina the contemporary design-led one, Capella the service-led, residential-style one.
- Which architect and designer are credited?
- Kengo Kuma is credited with the architecture (the Japanese architect known for layered timber roof structures, also the architect at Capella Bangkok and Capella Sydney). André Fu is credited with the interior design (the Hong Kong designer also responsible for the Capella Bangkok and Andaz Singapore interiors). The pairing repeats the Capella Bangkok and Capella Sydney collaboration here in the Maldives.
- What is the Auriga Spa programme?
- Auriga is Capella Hotel Group's signature wellness brand, running across the group's Singapore, Bangkok and Sydney properties. The Maldivian programme publishes six treatment rooms (including a flotation tank), a VIP spa suite with hydrotherapy tub, an adjacent infrared sauna relaxation area, and a full fitness centre. The Auriga programme in Singapore and Bangkok runs lunar-cycle treatment menus that shift across the month; whether the Maldivian version carries the same lunar framework is still operator-confirmation pending.
